Abstract:

Objective: To explore the associations of underestimated body weight with estimated glomerular filtration rate and quality of life among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods: A total of 260 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were surveyed in a cross-sectional study in three local township public health centers in Nantong City, China. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, body mass index, body weight perception, blood pressure, duration of diabetes, serum laboratory test results, behavioral variables (smoking/drinking/exercise status), and quality of life were collected. Results: From our study showed that 54.2% of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients have misconceptions about their weight status. Underestimation of body weight was found to be a predictor of lower estimated glomerular filtration rate using the MDRD equation. T2DM patients who underestimated body weight reported a poorer quality of life in the domain of mental component summary scores. Conclusion: At the first visit, clinicians need to pay attention to helping type 2 diabetes mellitus patients increase their awareness of actual weight categories and improve their weight loss willingness.
