Abstract:

Isotretinoin is a vitamin A derivative that acts by binding to retinoid receptors, being used in severe forms of acne. Among its side effects were reported neuropsychiatric symptoms that warranted consideration by the US Food and Drug Administration ; this reported the possibility that isotretinoin causes depression and, rarely, suicidal ideation or suicidal behaviors. Nevertheless, a consensus of the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that the available data did not substantiate such an association. Therefore, the psychiatric effects of this drug remain controversial.
